Why Boise State Music

Overview

  • Mission
    • The Department of Music develops the human mind, body, and spirit in a supportive and challenging environment that embraces the musical richness of our world. As such, the central mission of the department is to foster artistic and scholarly excellence through training which integrates theoretical, musicological, multicultural, performance, and pedagogical studies. Pursuing this mission, the department enriches the lives of Boise State University students and faculty, the broader Treasure Valley community and ultimately the citizens of Idaho and the surrounding regions.

    • To train students to be excellent, comprehensive musicians, capable of making connections among all aspects of music
    • To prepare students for successful careers in an increasingly interconnected global community
    • To stimulate and support creative activity, research, service, and lifelong learning in all areas of music study
    • To provide a diverse offering of instrumental and vocal ensembles and general studies courses for the entire university community
    • To advance the department’s outreach and influence through live performances, recordings, scholarly publications, and presentations in local, regional, national, and international venues

  • Professional Collaboration Opportunities
    • Boise, Idaho is home to numerous professional arts groups, many of which also perform in the Morrison Center.  Our students sometimes will receive discounted tickets, masterclasses, lessons, and playing opportunities.

      • Boise Baroque Orchestra
      • Ballet Idaho
      • Idaho Dance Theatre
      • Idaho Shakespeare Festival

  • Bands

    • The Symphonic Winds since 2011:
      • Performed at the 2011 College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA)
        National Conference in Seattle, WA
      • Performed at the 2015 American Bandmasters Association (ABA) National
        Convention in Reno, NV
      • Commissioned and premiered five new works for wind band
    • Performed at numerous All-State and Idaho Music Educators Association conferences,
      regional CBDNA conferences, and Northwest Percussion Festivals
    • Boise State Jazz:
      • Performing opportunities throughout the community, including during the annual
        Gene Harris Jazz Festival
    • Blue Thunder Marching Band:
      • Additional scholarships available, all instruments are provided, travel, gear,
        no fundraising, game day experiences, friendships

  • Choirs

    • Appearances at American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) and state Music
      Educators Association conferences
    • Yearly tours throughout the Northwest
    • Biannual international tours: Belgium and The Netherlands (2017)
    • Students are:
      • Resident artists with Opera Idaho
      • Interns with local youth choruses and church choirs

  • Strings

    • Graduate String Quartet
      • Collaboration with the Boise Philharmonic, including at least 50 performances
        during the season
      • Members will receive scholarship stipends
    • Numerous master class opportunities with guest artists hired by the Boise Chamber
      Music Series and Boise Philharmonic
