Aimee Atkinson has been teaching for 14 years and is passionate about accessible music education for every student. She began working with the vocal jazz students at Boise State University this year and is proud of their hard work and the great strides being made by the ensemble.
Aimee has taught music at Victory Middle School in Meridian, Idaho since it opened three years ago. In that time, choir registration has tripled. Before taking the position at Victory she taught for four years at Renaissance High School, an International Baccalaureate school in Meridian. There Aimee taught music theory, western music history, ethnomusicology, and score analysis, and she directed two choirs. Aimee moved to Boise from Pocatello, Idaho, where she taught music at Century High School for one year and across the district at elementary schools for five years. Before moving to Idaho, Aimee worked in Ephrata, Washington, as the choral director at Ephrata High School and in Seattle, Washington teaching jazz choir at Eckstein Middle School.
Aimee received her Master of Arts in Education from Idaho State University with an emphasis in Educational Administration in 2012, her Bachelor of Arts in Music and her K-12 teaching certificate from Seattle Pacific University in 2005, and her Associate of Arts degree from Edmonds Community College in 2003. At Edmonds CC she performed with the world-renowned vocal jazz ensemble Soundsation under the direction of Kirk Marcy. Aimee is thrilled to now be working at Boise State with developing jazz musicians.
Aimee has given various presentations as well as chaired State Choirs at various All Northwest and All State Conferences throughout her career. She focuses on sustainable teaching, inclusive music education, and teaching the “whole child”. Aimee has also worked on Idaho State Music Curriculum at various levels (district implementation to state adoption). Throughout her career, Aimee has worked with educators across the state of Idaho and various districts through the Northwest to enhance music education with passion and relevance.
