The Boise State University Symphony Orchestra’s season consists of four major orchestral concerts, along with participation in All-Departmental activities such as the Annual Holiday Concert, opera, musical, and sponsoring the Annual Concerto-Aria Competition Concert. Auditions will be done behind a screen for a committee of BSU faculty from each of the
respective instrumental areas.

1. A 2 minute solo of your choice.

2. *Marked excerpts. All marked excerpts for your instrument should be prepared as close to tempo as possible. It behooves you to listen to recordings of each of these pieces and work with your private teacher on the various elements of these excerpts that will make for a successful audition.

*All auditions may include one additional excerpt not previously marked and chosen by the faculty adjudicator at the time of the audition. This will not only test your sightreading ability, an important fundamental skill, but also test your general familiarity with the repertoire as a whole.

Please click to schedule your audition. Be sure to click on the appropriate tab for your instrument at the bottom of the page.

Listening to the material you are going to audition with is critical to your success. Listen for approximate tempo, style, articulations, etc. I’ve created an audition folder on Spotify to help you in this process. Signing up is free.

Please refer any further questions to Prof. Purdy directly.
