  • Symphonic Winds

    The Boise State University Symphonic Winds has been recognized as one of the premier large wind ensembles in the Northwest through invitations to perform at the College Band Directors National Association, National Conference in Seattle, Washington and the American Bandmasters Association, National Convention held in Reno, Nevada as well as performances at state and regional music conferences. The ensemble performs literature from the complete spectrum of contemporary music, traditional repertoire and large chamber ensemble music written for winds and percussion. The group has produced seven CD’s and commissioned three new works for band. The ensemble is open all students through full auditions at the beginning of the fall semester and limited auditions in the spring.

    University Symphony Orchestra

    The Boise State Symphony Orchestra’s season consists of four major orchestral concerts, along with participation in All-Departmental activities such as the Annual Holiday Concert, opera, musical, and sponsoring the Annual Concerto-Aria Competition Concert. Auditions are held each Fall and Spring for participation in the University Orchestra Program. We invite you to come play with us!

    Jazz Ensembles

    Jazz Studies at Boise State University includes the Boise State Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Lab Band, Jazz Combos, private lessons in improvisation and rhythm section instruments, and courses in Jazz Improvisation and Jazz History. The Jazz Ensemble, one of Boise State’s most visible musical groups on campus, performs numerous concerts both on and off campus and throughout the Northwest. Jazz Studies also includes the Gene Harris Jazz Festival, a major two-day event that brings together internationally acclaimed guest artists with students and community members across the Treasure Valley.

    Keith Stein Blue Thunder Marching Band

    The Blue Thunder Marching Band is one of the most prominent aspects of campus and community life. It serves as an ambassador for the University and its athletic programs, and is one of the most rewarding activities any student can pursue. The band has performed at bowl games across the United States and makes regular appearances on national television. Blue Thunder’s high energy, entertaining halftime shows and quality sound make this band the Pride of Idaho.

    All-Campus Band

    The All Campus Concert Band is an instrumental ensemble open to all Boise State University students. One performance is given each semester with outstanding repertoire selected from traditional works for wind band as well as contemporary literature. Members are not required to audition for acceptance into the ensemble.

    Percussion Ensemble

    In conjunction with the preparation of music for public performance, students acquire a first-hand knowledge of phrasing, implement selection, musical style and interpretation, and repertoire. Students are also encouraged to compose original music and/or arrange or adapt existing music for the percussion ensemble.

    Trombone Choir, Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble

    These Boise State ensembles offer both music majors and non-majors to participate in chamber music opportunities on and off campus. Participation in these ensembles helps to develop musicianship and communication skills, qualities that are essential for any musician!

  • Meistersingers

    meistersingers

    Meistersingers is Boise State University’s premier choral ensemble and represents the finest in choral excellence at Boise State. Membership is open to all interested Boise State students with a passion for quality choral literature. This auditioned group performs music from all historical periods and various nationalities. In addition, the Meistersingers perform three to four times a year, including regional/national tours and at the annual Boise State Holiday Concert. Auditions for the Meistersingers are held at the beginning of each academic year.

    University Singers

    University Singers is comprised of students from across the Boise State campus. No audition is required. Rehearsals are Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 4:30-5:45.

    Women’s Choir, “Vox Angelis”

    Vox Angelis is Boise State’s select Women’s Ensemble and is open to all interested students. They meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the early afternoon. Auditions are held at the beginning of each semester. Previous singing experience and the ability to read music is highly recommended.

    Opera Theatre

    Opera Theatre meets three times per week as listed in the Boise State Class Schedule. Enrollment in this class is by audition only and/or instructor permission. Students must have substantial vocal training in order to meet the requirements for this course.

    The Opera Theatre program at Boise State works closely with the Boise State University Theatre Arts Department on all fully staged productions. The most recent collaboration was Thoroughly Modern Millie.

    In semesters in which there is not a full production, students in the class perform in opera excerpts in order to practice and develop the set of skills required on the operatic stage.

    Many voice students at Boise State are also members of the Opera Idaho Resident Company. Open to student, vocational and professional singers, the Resident Company offers abundant opportunities for education and professional development. Opera Theatre students who are members of the Resident Company may receive Opera Theatre course credit for participation in Opera Idaho productions.

    Vocal Jazz Ensemble

    The Boise State Vocal Jazz Ensemble is a group of select singers accompanied by piano, bass, guitar, and drums. They meet once a week to study and perform America’s original musical art form; jazz. For more than 20 years, the group has performed musical styles ranging from Latin beats to swing, from sensitive ballads to the blues.

    The ensemble is a recognized club of the Associated Students of Boise State University and each year they sponsor and produce the Boise State Vocal Jazz Festival, which provides educational and musical experiences for up to 30 junior high and high school jazz choirs from Idaho and the surrounding states.

    The Boise State Vocal Jazz ensemble has performed at the Sun Valley Jazz Jamboree and was selected as one of the outstanding college choirs at the University of Idaho Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival.

  • Les Bois Chamber Players

    Les Bois String Trio serves as the nucleus for the larger Les Bois Chamber Players, ensemble in residence at Boise State University. Each member is a full time studio faculty member at Boise State University. Each is an active performer on a local, regional, and national stage. Group performances range from duos to nonets. Les Bois Chamber Players features an exciting repertoire from Bach, Brahms, and Dohnányi, to the contemporaries Philip Glass and John Harbison.

    Boise State Faculty Woodwind Quintet

    The Boise State University Faculty Wind Quintet began in 2003 as an outreach for the Boise State Department of Music. Performing during the fall and spring semesters, the Quintet regularly visits area school music programs, gives formal concerts in the Morrison Center Recital Hall, and travels through Idaho and the Pacific Northwest to give clinics and educational performances.

    The Faculty Wind Quintet personnel includes the studio teachers in the Wind/Brass Area: Nicole Molumby, flute; Leslie Moreau, clarinet; David Saunders, horn; Janelle Oberbillig, bassoon; Jeanne Belfy, oboe.
