Trumpeter John Kilgore joined the Boise Philharmonic as Principal Trumpet at the start of the 2017-18 season. Within the Orchestra, he also serves as Principal Trumpet of the Boise Philharmonic Brass Quintet and Chamber Players. Additionally, he performs Principal Trumpet for Ballet Idaho and on various commercial music concerts and productions in Boise. Prior to joining the Philharmonic, Kilgore was a member of the Ocala (FL) Symphony Orchestra and frequently performed with the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed with the Lexington (KY) Philharmonic and the West Virginia Symphony.
Since January 2018, Dr. Kilgore has been on faculty at the Boise State University Department of Music where he teaches applied trumpet lessons and coaches chamber music. Previously, he taught at Florida State University (FSU) as a Graduate Teaching Assistant for the trumpet studio. At FSU he taught applied trumpet lessons to music majors, minors, jazz majors, coached chamber music ensembles and assisted in instructing trumpet studio class. As a private teacher, Dr. Kilgore maintains a studio of middle and high school aged students. Several of his former and current student successfully participate in regional and state solo contests, participate in summer music organization and have gained acceptance into collegiate music programs.
Outside of studio teaching and performing, Dr. Kilgore recently completed a doctoral treatise on world-renowned classical trumpeter Philip Collins, the former Principal Trumpet of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Pops Orchestra (1975-2007). The original research presents the first in-depth depiction of Collins’ life, artistic career, pedagogical approaches and extensive recording discography. As a guest trumpet artist, Dr. Kilgore’s winter and spring 2019 engagements include masterclasses at the University of Idaho, Eastern Washington University and the University of North Carolina Charlotte. Additionally, he serves the greater-Boise region as a Musician in the Classroom presenter where he travels to teach music appreciation classes in grade-school classrooms.
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, John Kilgore holds a Doctor of Music degree in Performance from Florida State University with a curriculum focus in music history, a Master of Music in Performance from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati, and a Bachelor of Music in Performance from Ohio University. His primary teachers include John Schlabach, Alan Siebert, Philip Collins and Dr. Christopher Moore.
