Audition Repertoire Requirements-Brass

TRUMPET

  1. Be Prepared to play any Major scale.  Two octaves when possible.
  2. Chromatic scale – two octaves from low C to high C and back.  Quarter note = 60.
  3. Lyrical etude or solo.  2-5 minutes of playing
    1. This should demonstrate melodic phrasing, dynamic contrast, and sound production
    2. Examples include the Haydn Trumpet Concerto, 2nd movement, and the Bohme melodic etudes.
    3. You may play several sections of a longer work.
  4. Technical etude or solo. 2-5 minutes of playing
    1. This should demonstrate fast playing, variations in articulation (including multiple tongue styles), and evenness of finger technique.
    2. Examples include the Goedicke concert etude and Arban characteristic studies.
    3. You may play several sections of a longer work.
  5. OPTIONAL – Jazz and Commercial Playing (to be considered for jazz scholarship)
    1. Play, by yourself, any jazz standard and improvise two or more choruses.  (ie: there will never be another you, billies bounce, etc…)
      1. Demonstrate your jazz phrasing, style, and familiarity with the harmonic progression of the tune.
    2. Play an excerpt from the lead trumpet repertoire.  (ie: Any shout chorus from the big band literature).
      1. Demonstrate your lead trumpet style, articulation, inflection, time, and accuracy.
  6. OPTIONAL – Two contrasting orchestral excerpts of your choice.
    1. Such as Leonore #2/Promenade from Pictures at an exhibition and Pines offstage solo/Prelude to Carmen.
      1. Demonstrate orchestral production, transposition, eveness of sound, familiarity with the excerpt, time and pitch.

HORN

1. Major scales, 2 octaves: C,D, Eb, F, G
2. Etude:

  • Kopprasch: 60 Selected Studies, #’s 6,8,10,17
  • or
  • Maxime-Alphonse: Book I, # s 3-10

3. Solo:

  • Mozart: Concerto # 3, 1st mov.t or other solo of comparable difficulty

TENOR TROMBONE

Scales
1. C, D, Eb major scales, one octave.
2. F, G, Bb major scales, two octaves.
3. Chromatic scale, two and a half octaves, low F to high Bb.

Solo
1. You may perform any piece from the Texas UIL Prescribed Music List
OR
2. Prepare contrasting lyrical and technical selections.

Lyrical examples:

  • Bordogni/Rochut: Melodious Etudes, vol. 1, Nos. 2, 6, or 11.
  • Telemann/Ostrander: Sonata in F, 1st or 3rd movement.

Technical examples:

  • Telemann/Ostrander: Sonata in F, 2nd or 4th movement.
  • Blume: 36 Studies for the Trombone, #’s 4,6, or 14.

BASS TROMBONE

1. Bb, C, D, Eb, F, G major scales, two octaves.
2. Chromatic scale, two and a half octaves, pedal B flat to high F.
3. Etude and/or Solo that demonstrate(s) lyrical and technical playing; for example:

  • Blume/Fink: 36 Studies for Trombone with F Attachment, any one.
  • Fink: Studies in Legato for Bass Trombone or Tuba, any one.
  • Pederson: Elementary Etudes for Bass Trombone, any one.
  • Jacob: Cameos, any two movements.
  • McCarty: Sonata for Bass Trombone, 1st movement.
  • Or, any piece from the Texas UIL Prescribed Music List

EUPHONIUM

1. C, D, Eb major scales, one octave.
2. F, G, Bb major scales, two octaves.
3. Chromatic scale, two and a half octaves, low F to high Bb.
3. Etude and/or Solo that demonstrate(s) lyrical and technical playing; for example:

TUBA

1. F and Bb major scales, 2 octaves.
2. Chromatic scale, low F to high Bb.
3. Etude/Solo: one or more of the following:

  • Bordogni/Jacobs: Legato Etudes for Tuba, #’s 2, 4, 7, 11.
  • Blazhevich: 70 Studies, Volume 1, #’s 6, 7, 9, 18, 21, 28.
  • Bach/Bell: Air and Bouree, both movements.
  • Haddad: Suite for Tuba, 1st movement.
  • Marcello/Little: Sonata No. 1 in F, movements 1 & 2 or movements 3 & 4.
  • Or, any piece from the Texas UIL Prescribed Music List
